Biographical statement

My PhD explored the interaction of politics, urbanisation and subjectivity in the fiction of the Japanese novelist Abe Kôbô (1924-1993). While I am continuing to work on this project I have also begun to devote a significant part of my time to literary translation and, to a lesser extent, translation theory. I have taken a bit of a detour into Okinawan fiction but am now working on expanding my dissertation to encompass the relationship between politics and literature Japanese literary left in the immediate postwar era.

Research interests

Modern and contemporary Japanese literature, the problem of subjectivity in the Japanese postwar literary left, literary translation, translation theory, Okinawan fiction.
