Biographical statement
I studied psychology, Asian religions and Chinese at the ANU, and completed my doctoral thesis after periods spent at universities and research centres in Taiwan (National Chengchi University, National Taiwan University and the Center for Chinese Studies at the National Central Library). My doctoral thesis was concerned with Buddhist responses to the intellectual landscapes of China and Taiwan in the twentieth century. My present research is focused on the engagement of republican-era intellectuals with Yogācāra Buddhism.
Research interests
Chinese intellectual history; Chinese religion and modernity; Buddhism in contemporary China; the engagement of Chinese Buddhism with non-Buddhist religious and ideological systems; inter-religious engagement; Warring States period philosophy and contemporary thought; Chinese strategic philosophy.
