Japan

The Japan Area Group is a cross campus network of ANU people working on Japanese studies. The Japan Area group includes:

Japan Centre

(Faculty of Asian Studies) The Japan Centre's aim is to equip students with the linguistic and cultural competence needed to function effectively in Japan, and the education to enable them to understand Japan in depth. The Japan Centre degree programs are open to undergraduate and graduate students taking degrees in the Faculty of Asian Studies as well as to students enrolled in other Faculties at the Australian National University.

Australia Japan Research Centre

(Asia Pacific School of Economics and Government) The Australia-Japan Research Centre (AJRC) conducts research to explore and improve understanding of Australia and Japan's strategic interests in the Asia Pacific economy. Its policy-oriented areas of interest include developments in Asia Pacific economic cooperation integration and issues associated with the formation of an East Asian Community. This encompasses research on trade, finance, and macroeconomics, as well as international economic relations.

Australian Network for Japanese Law

The Australian Network for Japanese Law (ANJeL) is an initiative of the law faculties at the Australian National University (ANU), the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Sydney (USyd). The core aim of ANJeL is to promote scholarly engagement with Japanese law, especially in Australia.

History

Li, Dr Narangoa
Dr Narangoa is a historian specializing in the history of Northeast Asia, especially Japan’s imperial half century (1895-1945) and the developement of Mongol national identities. Her research covers issues ranging from collaboration, the nature of borders and minority issues in China to religion, urban culture and traditional medicine.
McCormack, Emeritus Professor Gavan
Modern Japanese (and East Asian) political, intellectual and environmental history; changing views of nature in the course of modernisation in Japan and East Asia, especially in respect of rivers and water; regional environmental history; struggles over the definition of past (especially China and Pacific wars) and future (beyond capitalism and the Cold War) identities in Japan; North Korea as regional and global problem in early 21st century, with especial reference to the Japan-North Korean relationship.
Morris-Suzuki, Professor Tessa
The social history of Japanese technology; national identity and ethnic minorities in Japan; the history of indigenous peoples in Northeast Asia; modern Japanese historiography; globalisation processes (with particular reference to Northeast Asia).
Tsu, Dr Timothy Yun Hui
Japans Colonial Rule of Taiwan; Japan and Colonial Southeast Asia; Japan and the Overseas Chinese; Nature and Culture in Modern Japan; Religion and society in Late Imperial China.
