PhilippinesThe Australian National University has long encouraged research on the Philippines. Besides the faculty members who teach and research about the country, the university also features a strong library collection of Filipiniana that is nicely supplemented by the extensive collection at the nearby National Library of Australia. At any one time, four or five dozen MA and PhD students at the ANU are studying the country and researching topics ranging from early history to contemporary cultural, economic, political, and social conditions in the Philippines. Periodically Filipinists on campus organize "Philippine Update" conferences. The ANU Philippine Studies Group has monthly seminars, usually convening in the homes of local Filipino Australians, which creates a valuable linkage between the university and the wider Canberra community.
