History

Reverend Robert Bourne (1793-1871) went to the Society Islands as a missionary for the London Missionary Society in 1817. In 1822, he began the mission at Tahaa. He left Tahiti in 1827 and retired from the LMS to England in 1829. In 1931 he moved to Sydney, where he established a drapery store, and later to Victoria then Queensland c.1853, where he took up a position for his son-in-law, George Raff, a merchant, sugar grower and politician. Bourne is buried in the Brisbane General Cemetery, Toowong, Brisbane, alongside his wife Ann who died in 1878.
