He spent his early years on his parents' plantation at Tavua, Viti Levu. During WWI he attended Melbourne Grammar School and then returned to Fiji to work for Clive Joske's trading company, later W.R. Carpenter & Co. Ltd. Johnson eventually became manager for the South West Pacific. The manuscript, of about 200 pp., is a photocopy of the original which no longer exists. The photographs referred to in the margins were not made available for microfilming.
