Correspondence and diary of Ba Campaign
John Hall James, an Australian, was born in Richmond, Victoria, in 1848. He went to Fiji at the height of the cotton boom in 1866, took up land on Viti Levu, and returned to Australia eight or nine years later after a hurricane had destroyed his crops. He died in Melbourne in 1923.
The correspondence, which covers the period 1870 - 1875, and the diary of the Ba Campaign, May 1873, give a vivid idea of the life and attitudes of a European planter in Fiji just before and just after Cession.<BR><BR>For further descriptions see <I>Transactions and Proceedings of the Fiji Society</I>, 1958-59, Vol.7, pp.73-89.

Fison (1832-1907) a university-educated man, with a keen interest in anthropology, was born in Suffolk, England. He migrated to Australia in 1856, joined the Methodist Church, and went to Fiji as a Wesleyan missionary in 1864. He remained in Fiji until 1884, when he returned to Australia and became editor of the Spectator, a Melbourne church paper.
Copies of letters, notes on Fiji customs and personalities, sketches of life in Fiji, and an early draft of Fison's book 'Tales of Old Fiji' (London, 1907). The wording of some of the tales, as recorded in these papers, has been much worked over and occasionally differs in its final form from that in the published versions.

The Pacific Concerns Resource Center was the secretariat of the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific Movement. The first conference of the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific Movement was held in Suva in April 1975. The Pacific Concerns Resource Center published several documents relating to a nuclear free and independent Pacific, including Pacific news bulletin, a monthly journal first published in Sydney, and from 1999, in Suva. Issues and countries it covered include decolonisation and self-determination struggles, the environment and sustainable development, indigenous rights, sovereignty and land rights, demilitarisation and anti-nuclear campaigns, intellectual property rights for indigenous peoples, East Timor, West Papua, Bougainville, Kanaky, Te Ao Maohi and the Philippines.
Other documents filmed include: Pacific Concerns Resource Centre annual report (1999-2004); Canberra Kanaky bulletin (1985-1986), edited by Barry and Dorothy Shineberg; Kanaky update: towards New Caledonian independence (1984-1989), edited by George Tieman and Reverend Dick Wooton; Nuclear free Pacific news (1982-1983); Pacific Concerns Resource Center bulletin (1981-1985); and, Pacific news (later title: Pacific news bulletin) (1983-2004).
The collection also includes: To'ere: no te tiamaraa, a private newspaper published weekly in Faa'a, Tahiti, and edited by Claude Marere from 2002-2006; and, Independence and sovereignty for Te Ao Maohi (French Polynesia), translated by Nic MacLellan and published in Faa'a, Tahiti in 1997.

Photographs of Fiji and Tonga 1975
This collection of 52 photographs records a visit to Fiji and Tonga in January/February 1975 by Bill and Jan Gammage. The visit was to see friends and look around.
Of Fiji, there are 28 photos. The subjects include: Nadi, Man Friday Hotel near Korolevu on the south coast of Viti Levu, Suva, and Levuka on the Ovalau Islands.
Of Tonga, 24 photos were taken. The subjects include in and around Kolovai, Sione and Ruth Latukefu's home, Nuku'alofa on the north coast including the Royal Palace, Orahaei Beach near caves and a boat connected to the Minerva Reefs incident, the blowholes and the Triithon.
Gammage, Bill
Dr William Henry Harvey was a botanist, becoming professor and chair of Botany at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, from 1856 until his death in 1866.
The letters, four in number, give vivid accounts of Dr Harvey's visits to Tonga and Fiji in the latter half of 1855 during the course of a world tour. The letters are addressed to Harvey's sister Hannah (Mrs Hannah Harvey Todhunter) and his niece Mary (Mary Christy Harvey). Dr Harvey was particularly interested in algae; but he also investigated other aspects of the natural history of Tonga and Fiji, and wrote at length of a religious revival in Tonga and cannibalism in Fiji. (Twenty-six other letters of Dr Harvey, dealing with other aspects of his world tour, which took in Gilbraltar, Malta, Ceylon, Australia and New Zealand, are deposited in the library of Trinity College, Dublin). Oceania Marist Province Archives
The Oceania Marist Province Archives Series (OMPA) is the result of a special project during which records of the Catholic Church in islands of the Western Pacific were copied by Father Theo B. Cook, SM in collaboration with the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau. (Cook was born Theodorus Bernardus Wilhelmus Kok but chose to go by the name Cook in Australia: Povey, 2010). The OMPA series covers the Diocese of Tonga (OMPA 1-25), Diocese of Samoa and Tokelau (OMPA 26-74), Marist Fathers, Rome (OMPA 80-100), Diocese of Wallis and Futuna (OMPA 101-126), Diocese of Port Vila (OMPA 127-178), Archdiocese of Noumea (OMPA 179-360) and the Oceania Marist Province Archives (OMPA 361-400).
Detailed indexes were prepared for the six diocese and those records copied in Rome. These can be found at http://asiapacific.anu.edu.au/pambu/collections/microfilm.php or compiled in The Catholic Church in the Western Pacific: a guide to records on microfilm (Robert Langdon, ed.), Canberra, 1986.

This collection of 54 photographs records a visit to Fiji in August 2009 by Bill Gammage. The visit was to see friends and look around. The photos were taken in Suva and around Viti Levu. PMBPhoto_101 complements these photos.
Subjects include Suva, Suva hinterland, Bau, Takalana Bay and Moon Reef, Tongan hill fort and views, Nausori Highlands and Bukuyu Village. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes and Mt Victoria (Mt Tomanivi) are also subjects.

Catalogue of ethnographical collections
A catalogue of the ethnographic items collected by the United States Exploring Expedition to the Pacific (1838-42) led by Commodore Charles Wilkes. The Expedition visited the Tuamotu Islands, Tahiti (in French Polynesia), Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Lord Howe Island, Australia, New Zealand/Aotearoa, Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Marshall Islands, and Hawaii. The catalogue was prepared in 1846 by Titian Ramsay Peale, an artist-naturalist with the Expedition. A typescript version, prepared by the PMB, follows the original document on the microfilm.
