Farquhar, a farmer of Maryborough, Queensland, visited New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands and New Hebrides (Vanuatu) in the schooner 'City of Melbourne' in November 1870 to January 1871 to recruit Pacific Islander labourers for himself and other farmers in Maryborough. He made a second voyage to New Caledonia, the New Hebrides and Banks Islands in the schooner Petrel in September 1871-January 1872 as a government agent under the Polynesian Labourers' Act of 1868.

Custom stories of the Solomon Islands were published in 5 volumes.
In addition to these 5 volumes, a bound volume of stories collected by Father Peter Geerts and edited by Dick Keevil has also been microfilmed. Dick Keevil lived and worked in the Solomon Islands from 1958-1983. Father Peter served in the Solomon Islands for 25 years, of which 20 were with the Are’ Are’ people. Father Peter learned the Are’ Are’ language and transcribed the stories as he heard them in the vernacular. Keevil made two copies of the bound collection of Custom Stories of the Solomon Islands, and gave them as a gift to his daughters in August 1999.

This collection contains research papers of Reverend Dr Sione Latukefu. The papers include articles (by Latukefu and others), copies of archival documents from various institutions as well as handwritten notes and typed transcriptions. Documents relate to governance in Tonga, including the pro-democracy movement, government and royal papers, laws and international treaties. Many documents also relate to the missionary history of Tonga and publications such as newsletters of the Wesleyan Methodist and Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga.

Correspondence re the British Solomon Islands Protectorate

Woodford, the first Resident Commissioner of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate, established its postal services and designed the first postage stamp used there.

The correspondence includes a 4-page history of the philatelic services of the Protectorate and mentions the design of the first postage stamp and its production.The film also includes correspondence of ERIC MONCKTON 1909-10, describing the establishment of a copra plantation at Ko Ko Nai in the Shortland Islands. The correspondence includes a sketch of his 'native' house and describes how it was built; his efforts in copra production and trading; recruitment of native labour both local and from Malaita; the trochus shell industry; his experiment in the timber trade and his daily life in general. Also mentioned is Eric's brother, Claude (H.C. Monckton) who put money into the Ko Ko Nai venture, and who later became Advisor on Native Affairs in Fiji. It was on Eric's estate that S.G.C. Knibbs, Commissioner of Lands for the Protectorate, did his initial surveys in the Shortlands, 1913-1914 (see Knibb's book, The Savage Solomons as They Were and Are (London: Seeley, Service & Co. Ltd., 1929, pp.115-116).

Arundel (1814-1919) was a leading figure in the Pacific phosphate industry from the 1860s until his death, active largely in Kiribati and Nauru. See Pacific Islands Monthly, April 1974, pp.59-61.

The correspondence is chiefly with Lord Stanmore who was chairman of the Pacific Islands Company Ltd, and later the Pacific Phosphate Company Ltd, of which Arundel was the Vice-Chairman.
