Biographical history
Captain Alexander Macy was born and buried in Nantucket, Massachusetts, USA. He first went to sea at sixteen years old and after a career of 27 years on different vessels in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocreans, became president of the Nantucket Savings bank until 1861.

The MARIA made a whaling voyage to the Pacific Ocean in 1832-36. She rounded Cape Horn, cruised on the Chilean and Peruvian coasts and touched at the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Maui (Hawai'i).
There are two documents:
- A typescript copy of a journal kept by the ship's carpenter Joseph B. ?, 18 February 1833-27 April 1836.
- Logbook kept by Captain Macy beginning 13 October 1832 and ending 17 January 1836.
