Scope and content

F.E. Lawes was a brother of the Rev. William George Lawes, the pioneer LMS missionary on Niue. The former was stationed on Niue from 1868 to 1910.

A notebook of 124 pp. giving the Niue equivalents of English words from 'a' to 'mistrust'. A second notebook containing the words for the rest of the alphabet appears to have been lost. The complete vocabulary was the basis for the publication, A Vocabulary and Grammar of the Niue Dialect of the Polynesian Language by Edward Tregear and S. Percy Smith (Wellington, 1907). Smith was the first Government Resident on the island after it was annexed to New Zealand in 1900
