When she’s not engrossed in research, she loves to play with her cat Liquorice and watch old Japanese films and shomin-geki (Japanese family dramas). But she’s gearing up for another busy and exciting chapter soon. Alison Darby, officially Dr Darby now—is off to Taiwan next month on the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship to study Chinese and conduct further archival research to extend her dissertation for a planned book.

Two days ago, when Shvetal shared her thoughts on Graduation Day, here’s what she had to say: “I’m still expecting to receive an email from ANU stating it was all a mistake and I haven’t actually graduated….I cannot wait for it to sink in!”
