Career opportunities

The Asia Pacific region is playing an increasingly significant role in defining the strategic, political and economic direction of our world, and yet there is a critical shortage of professionals with expertise in this field.

With a specialist undergraduate or graduate degree from the College of Asia and the Pacific, you can meet this demand, using your regionally-specific knowledge and skills to succeed in a wide range of sectors both in Australia and overseas.

As former prime minister, and ANU Asian Studies graduate, Kevin Rudd can attest, Asian Pacific studies is particularly well-suited to improving your career opportunities in government departments and agencies with regional policy interests, including:

Former students have also enjoyed successful careers with Non-government organisations (NGOs), including aid, human rights and humanitarian agencies, and foreign government agencies such as the Japan External Trade Organisation.

In international business, including banking, finance, trade and marketing, your Asia-Pacific qualification can equip you with expertise on the specific needs of regional markets and policies, allowing you to provide risk analysis for companies investing in or exporting to the region, and to negotiate contracts, business deals and joint ventures.

You can also find career opportunities in culture and the arts, media, education and research, tourism and translation.

If your studies have included language training, you’ll find your skills are in demand across a number of sectors, for instance, in government departments dealing with immigration, ethnic affairs, social welfare, health, and consumer affairs. Language graduates who complete a Diploma of Education can also teach languages in secondary schools.

Of course, like many of our graduates, you can take the road less travelled, and embark upon a unique adventure of your own design. Whether it be working as a tour guide in the south of India, an interpreter for a Korean basketball team, a movie location scout in Southeast Asia, or even the Prime Minister of Australia, Asia-Pacific studies will help you find your place in the world.
