Join the ANU Climate Alumni Leadership Program 2025 and attend COP30
Have you always wanted to attend the international climate negotiations Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting and have your voice heard?
Are you a Pacific Islander postgraduate student at the ANU?
Have you got a background in climate change issues, or something important to say?
The ANU Pacific Institute is offering support for up to 3 ANU Pacific Islander students to attend COP30. This support will cover return economy airfares (from/to Canberra), accommodation for the duration of the conference, and a per diem.
Successful applicants will also receive mentoring from leading ANU climate change negotiators and scholars, including those from a First Nations and Pacific Islander background.
They UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP) will be held in Belém, Brazil, 10-21 November 2025. Applicants must be available to attend the conference in full.
The application deadline is 5pm (Canberra time) on Monday 22 September 2025. Late applications will not be accepted.

Field of study
Understanding Climate Change Negotiations and Climate Change Issues
Eligibility
The award will be available for up to 3 continuing ANU PhD or Masters students who meet the following eligibility criteria:
- a domestic and/or international student; and
- undertaking a PhD/Masters project related to climate change, or with a keen interest in climate change issues (supported by a developed project brief); and
- must be Pacific Islander.
Applications that don't meet these criteria will not be considered.
Benefits
- The ANU Pacific Institute will award support costs for accommodation, return economy flights, and a per diem while in Belém, Brazil for COP30 from 10-21 November 2025.
- An additional benefit is the opportunity for a professional or personal mentorship with a member of the ANU Climate Alumni Leadership program (Sala Dr George Carter, Dr Virginia Marshall and Associate Professor Siobhan McDonnell).
Selection criteria
Selection will be made on the basis of the following Selection Criteria:
- applicability of the candidate’s project to contribute to climate change negotiations, civil society activities or other climate change related outcomes at COP; and
- academic merit, potential and performance based on their academic record, referee reports and other evidence; and
- the applicant's background and reasons for seeking the scholarship including applicant's demonstration of how the scholarship could be a game-changer for climate change negotiations, or other activities at COP.
Application process
Applicants should complete the electronic form and upload the following documents combined in one PDF:
- A concise statement (1-2 pages) addressing the Eligibility Criteria. Applications that do not address the Eligibility Criteria will not be considered. The statement must also outline the applicant's background and explain why this scholarship would be a game-changer for them or for the COP30 negotiations, civil society activities or other climate change related outcomes at COP.
- Supporting documents relating to the Selection Criteria, including:
- 2 references from supervisors and/or other relevant sources; and
- Official ANU academic record and other relevant documents.
- CV (of no more than 4 pages).
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
