At the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, we actively collaborate with leaders from higher education, government, business, and industry to establish robust, lasting, and innovative partnerships.
Ways of collaborating
By partnering with us, organisations can gain access to a wealth of knowledge and expertise on the economic, political, and cultural dynamics of the Asia-Pacific region. Our faculty members and researchers are renowned for their deep understanding of the region's history, languages, and cultures, and are engaged in cutting-edge research on issues ranging from environmental sustainability to trade and investment.
We provide our partners with a range of valuable services, including:
Research expertise
With more than 300 academics in four research schools, the College has the largest concentration of Asia-Pacific experts in the English-speaking world. Our scholars combine disciplinary, regional and policy expertise to tackle challenges and opportunities of this rapidly evolving part of the world.
Our research is centred around seven key themes designed to support transformative change:
- Policy and governance
- Security
- International relations and cooperation
- Development
- Environmental and climate crises
- Migration and mobility
- Histories, cultures and languages
Across the College, we work closely with leaders in government, business and industry to translate this research into practical support, so they can make the best decisions today, for a better future tomorrow.
The Asia Foundation
There is excellent synergy between the academic expertise of many researchers in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and the work of the non-profit international development organisation The Asia Foundation (TAF). Our formal partnership began in 2016 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that facilitates exchange and collaboration programs in areas of mutual interest and benefit to both institutions.

Since then, we have also signed a Distinguished Visitors Agreement that enables TAF staff to undertake a visiting fellowship within our College for up to 12 months. This creates an opportunity for the visiting fellows to pursue academic research and writing while also enabling their participation in various activities, including guest lectures, master classes for higher-degree research students and outreach initiatives.
Ritsumeikan University
The partnership between ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and Ritsumeikan University’s College of Global Liberal Arts has led to the development of Australia’s first undergraduate dual degree with a Japanese partner. Enabling students from each institution to graduate with two Bachelor degrees after four years of study, the dual degree gives students a wonderful opportunity to deepen their knowledge of our region and spend time studying in both Australia and Japan.

Our first cohort of students from this innovative dual degree program will graduate in 2023 - we look forward to celebrating this significant milestone and to continuing to build on the success of the program. This partnership has also initiated a Visiting Researcher Scheme that enables research visits in either direction for periods of up to three months, thereby building new research collaborations.
University of Papua New Guinea
The first Memorandum of Understanding between the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) was signed in 2012, and since then there have been several renewals. We have a rich collaboration with UPNG across education and research programs, research training and capacity-building, and outreach activities.

In addition to our long-standing collaboration on the delivery of PNG Update Conferences, new developments include the expansion of our language offerings to include Tok Pisin – ANU is the first in the world to offer Tok Pisin online, opening up the study of this language to students from all over the world, and the Inaugural Archaeological Field School launched in 2022 – a jointly hosted new field school initiative involving staff and students from both institutions undertaking archaeological practice in a remote part of PNG.
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The College’s partnership with DFAT is particularly strong in Pacific studies, where DFAT funding contributes to our ability to create and disseminate independent Pacific-focused research to foster stronger evidence-based policy-making in the Pacific. We also work with DFAT to provide bespoke training courses that utilise our world-leading Pacific expertise.
